What causes wrinkles?
The earliest sign of aging is the appearance of fine lines that begin to show on delicate and fragile areas of the skin, like under the eyes. If left neglected, these fine lines aided by sagging tissues, may continue to spread on the face until the skin is covered with fine cracks. These cracks may have varying depths. Over a period of time, the wrinkles become deeper. and reach the dermis. As the dermis loses essential collagen and its elastic quality, it becomes loose, and the wrinkles become deeper. By this time, the wrinkles will be more than .05mm in depth. These kinds of wrinkles can be the most difficult to treat. As a person ages, there can be a slacking of the elastic fibers that are responsible for the skin maintaining its tight appearance. The skin begins to sag, compounding the problem further.
Exposure to the sun is also an important cause of premature wrinkles. High exposure to the sun either in the form of sunbathing or failure to use a parasol or sun block can lead to the formation of wrinkles. There are two types of ultraviolet rays that can damage the skin. Ultraviolet B causes sun burn, and is linked to squamous cell and basal carcinoma, while Ultraviolet A causes wrinkles, tanning and melanoma.
Not all wrinkles are the same. For instance, people in their 20’s and 30’s may not see wrinkles anywhere else on the face or neck, but may begin to see wrinkles around the mouth or on the forehead. These are called frown lines, laugh lines or expression lines. These are caused when a person laugh, frowns and make other facial expressions over a period of many years. Fine lines begin to appear because of the loss of elasticity that’s age related. Expression lines appear over a period of many years of making facial expressions like smiling, frowning etc. Gravity lines are caused when the facial tissues begin to sag into deep furrows.
